Amy Winehouse Has Emphysema | Her Dad Mitch Reveals Devestating Drug Damage
Amy Winehouse has Emphysema, at least according to her dad Mitch. The only good thing about this latest news is that it means she hasn’t got tuberculosis.
Winehouse was rushed to hospital last Monday, and has been in there ever since having all the tests and scans she could possibly have. It was reported at the end of the week that she could indeed be suffering from killer infection TB, but that speculation has now proved to be unfounded.
Instead, in an interview with The Sunday Mirror, Amy’s father Mitch has revealed she is suffering from emphysema, a lung condition common to smokers and drug addicts which prematurely ages the lungs. At just 24 years of age Amy is very young to be have the incurable condition.
Mitch told the newspaper:
“She’s got emphysema. It’s in its early stages, but had it gone on for another month they painted a very vivid picture of her sitting there like an old person with a mask on her face struggling to breathe.
“With smoking the crack cocaine and the cigarettes her lungs are all gunked up. There are nodules around the chest and dark marks. She’s got 70 per cent lung capacity.”
It was also revealed that doctors had found a lump on one of Winehouse’ lungs, but tests have revealed it not to be cancerous. While she could still need a biopsy, and an operation to remove it, the emphysema is of more concern at this time.
Amy’s grandmother Cynthia died of lung cancer at the age of 76, and Mitch fears his daughter could end up suffering the same fate of being reliant on aspirated oxygen to breathe. He has told her in no uncertain terms that she now needs to stay off drugs or risking dying at a very young age.
To that end, he has warned drug dealer friends to keep their distance, as well as fellow druggie Pete Doherty, who Winehouse has spen a lot of time with of late. Mitch said:
“I’m saying to those drug dealers, and they know who they are, if they are supplying crack to Amy, then they’ve got to take responsibility. I don’t want her hanging out with her mates like Pete Doherty either.”
“What hope does she have if people are taking drugs around her? Already Amy says she feels better and wants to leave hospital and that worries me.”
Amy is still hopeful of performing at both Nelson Mandela’s 90th birthday party in Hyde Park, and Glastonbury Festival next weekend.
If Winehouse doesn’t now realise the damage she has done to her body and change her ways then I fear the end will come sooner than we all think. She needs to forget the drugs and concentrate her efforts on nurturing her enormous talent and providing the world with more great music. I for one hope this is the turning point of her life.
