Amy Winehouse Nominated For 3 MTV Video Music Awards | Lily Allen & U2 Get Mentions
The 2007 MTV Video Music Awards nominations were revealed yesterday and there’s some mild success for British artists. Amy Winehouse is the big winner, being put up for 3 awards, Best New Artist, Best Female Artist and Video of the Year for ‘Rehab’.
Lily Allen joins her in the Best New Artist category, and with 2 of the 5 nominees being British, we stand a good chance of seeing a winner from the UK. If I could choose one of the 2 it would be Lily Allen, because as much as I like Amy Winehouse, Lily has come from nowhere to the verge of super stardom in such a short space of time. I find it strange but nice that British females are finding success and fame over in the USA. Not because they don’t deserve it, but there’s a definite history of female artists from the UK not travelling well. Maybe it’s Winehouse and Allen’s essential Britishness which has seen them succeed where others have fallen by the wayside.
There was a time not so long ago when British females of note were so rare that the annual Brit Awards would have artists such as Annie Lennox as winners, even if they hadn’t released anything that year. Now the females are leading the way, and showing male artists such as Robbie Williams how to do it. And long may it continue, Kate Nash would be my next tip.
The only other British artist to get a mention in this year’s American lead MTV Video Music Awards is U2, being up for Most Earth Shattering Collaboration for ‘The Saints Are Coming‘ with Green Day. They have a good chance of winning, going up against songs less earth shattering and more Pop RnB. This is the only song on the list which is political in nature, and could win because of it.

She’s a complete mess yeah, but I kinda like that, it means she’s normal. I’d much rather have the spitting, drinking Amy than a sober and placid pop star.
