Amy Winehouse To Quit Touring In September? | Mitch Winehouse Speaks Out

by User ImageDave Parrack on July 12th, 2008

Amy Winehouse Live At Bowery Ballroom

Amy Winehouse’ problems have been well reported up to now. In fact, I’d go so far as to say that she is the musical artist who has had most press coverage on her personal problems ever. And the reporting of her personal problems sadly outweigh the amount of copy written about her singing career these days.

But part of the problem is that the people around her keep opening their mouths and telling the world all about her problems. Be it the friends who are referred to as sources in the newspapers, or the relatives who come out of the woodwork for a bit of a payday. And then there is her dad.

I’m sure Mitch Winehouse is a lovely guy, and he certainly comes across as such in all the newspaper, TV and radio interviews he does. But why does he feel the need to do all of these interviews? Sure, he’s got his daughter’s well-being at heart, and sure, I guess he feels the need to set the record straight when an erroneous report gets published about her, but man, give it a rest.

He’s just given yet another interview, this time to Sky News, (reported here via NME) where he spoke about the current state of Amy’s health, her incarcerated husband Blake Fielder-Civil, her efforts to get help for her substance abuse, and the plans to take a break from touring, for an indefinite amount of time.

On Amy’s health:

“I want people to understand, even if they give her one cigarette they’re causing her harm,”

“She has got a serious health problem. My biggest fear is that she would die and she won’t die from an overdose, she will die from emphysema.”

“We would be talking about a very slow and painful death, gasping for air. I would like to say to anybody who would supply her with substances to think about that.”

On Fielder-Civil:

“He has promised me that he will make things right when he is out. I’m going to give him the chance to do that. We will give him the benefit of the doubt. He has got to get himself clean.”

“It’s the last chance saloon if he comes out and they go back to what they were doing before. He’s a fit young man and probably go on like that for years, but Amy can’t and she needs to understand that.”

“I’m quite old fashioned and I believe that love can conquer anything. I believe they can have a happy ending, I really do believe that.”

On rehab:

“Amy’s a normal person, she’s not under house arrest - she understands what her problems are. She was the one who decided to go on the drug rehabilitation programme,”

And finally, on giving up playing live:

“From September 6, we’re not going to be doing any more work. Amy will be concentrating on writing for the new album,”

“She has five contractual gigs between now and then that she has to do. Then she will be relaxing and writing.”

Yes, we get it. Winehouse (Amy, rather than Mitch) is ill, and needs help. We also understand that she’s taking the first steps to maybe, finally, getting some help for her drink and drugs problem. We already knew all that, so this interview was unnecessary.

The only surprise to come out of it is the fact that Amy may be quitting touring, but my guess is that this will just be a temporary thing while she works on her new album with Mark Ronson. It may also be prompted by the fact she seems to have a thing for punching her fans right now.

Amy Winehouse is a huge talent, and I’m proud that the UK has produced a singer of her quality. But all the while her personal life is overshadowing her professional one, she’s more of an embarrassment than anything else.
