Amy Winehouse’s New Album Described As “Suicidal Music” | Fears For Mental Health
Amy Winehouse is currently writing her new album with friend and producer Mark Ronson. The songs will make up the bulk of her as yet untitled third LP release. And if you thought Back To Black was introspective and depressing, it seems you haven’t seen (or rather heard) anything yet.
The Sun is reporting that Winehouse has played some of the new tracks to her friends, and as impressive as they were, it also left them fearing for her mental state.
Since contracting a skin disease, thought to be Impetigo, and being photographed with ugly scabs on her face, Winehouse is thought to have become depressed, and even a recluse, so the negative lyrics on the new songs are hardly surprising.
However, to hear that some of the lyrics are so black that a friend described it as “suicidal music” is still quite shocking.
A source told the newspaper:
“Her next album is darker than ever. Amy’s got low self-esteem anyway but her skin has made her want to hide away from the rest of the world. And we have started noticing more and more cuts on her arms.”
“Her problems are pushing her over the edge and she’s turning into a depressed recluse. It’s not good for her to stay in so much.”
“People try to get her to leave the house and tell her not to worry about what people say. But she’d rather sit around her dingy flat all day writing about death.”
“She’s written quite a lot of the third album already. It is very, very dark but she produces some of her best music when she’s in pain — and the past few months have been hell for her.”
That’s the thing, despite how dark the material she is currently writing is, it’s probably also brilliant. There’s nothing like hearing an artist’s demons come out in their music, and Winehouse is sure to have many of those right now.
I think Ronson is likely to try and help make the album a bit less extreme too, so maybe we should expect a watered down version of some of the darkest songs on there.
Whatever happens, there are sure to be millions of people around the world eagerly awaiting the chance to hear her new material. The last year may have been a tumultuous one for Amy, but it has also seen her popularity rise massively, culminating in her winning five Grammy awards, which is unheard of for a British singer.
