Bloc Party New Single ‘Mercury’ | Indie Band Go Dance - Kele Okereke Talks New Album

by Dave Parrack on July 8th, 2008

Kele Okereke Bloc Party Live On StageWow, this is huge. Bloc Party have revealed heir new single, and it is completely different than anything they have released before, and I’m not too sure whether I like the direction the band are going in.

It all started with a countdown timer on the official Bloc Party website, which suddenly appeared, and pointed towards something big happening on Monday.

The timer then expired, and in its place were instructions to listen to Zane Lowe’s Radio 1 show.

At 7.30pm, Zane played Mercury for the first time ever, and well, it doesn’t really sound like the Bloc Party I know and love.

Lead singer and front man Kele Okereke spoke to Zane about the new song, and impending third album, saying:

“It’s a song we finished a little while ago that we’re really proud of so we thought we’d let everyone hear it. I’m still somewhat in awe.”

“I think we’re making the record I always wanted us to make. We’re kind of just in the middle of it, we’re still writing songs and mixing stuff.”

I’ve reviewed the song and video in full over on Killed By The Video Star today, but here it is for you to make your own mind up (after the fold)…

I’m still a bit shaken by it all if I’m honest. I should have seen this new direction coming after the band released Flux last October. That was much more dancey and up-tempo than their usual fare. But while that still retained the classic Bloc Party sound, with guitars, and Kele’s voice very strong over the top of the bassline, Mercury is something different altogether.

I am a huge Bloc Party fan, and they are one of the few bands (along with Keane and The Zutons) who I can claim to have been in to right from the start, before they got big. So it’s quite hard for me to adjust to the new sound, especially as I’m not a huge fan of dance, or electronic music.

I’m making huge assumptions here that the album will follow the same sort of pattern and sound as this single, but it’s a fair assumption to make. I’m sure I’ll still buy the album, but this song hasn’t grabbed me by the balls and swung me around the living room in the same way as something like Hunting For Witches did.

The single is due out on August 11th, while the album is expected to be released late 2008, early 2009. What do you think of the single, and the new direction for Bloc Party?
