Blur Reunion Happens | Damon Albarn & Co Do Lunch… But No Plans For A Comeback

by Dave Parrack on October 6th, 2007

Damon Albarn PortraitThe fabled Blur reunion that has been rumoured for months now has finally happened, but all it consisted of was a pleasant lunch and nothing more.

The four original Britpop band members met up again on Monday Oct 1st for what has been described as “an enjoyable lunch” but there’s no hint that they will ever get back in to a studio together.

Instead the band issued a statement through their official website explaining “there are currently no other music plans for Blur”.

Well what a huge disappointment that has turned out to be. I was really hopeful of a Blur reunion tour and maybe even some new material, as they were one of my favourite bands of the 90s. Unfortunately it looks like the personal and musical differences may not quite have fully healed up yet.

Guitarist Graham Coxon left the group in 2002, and that was the start of the end. Now it seems destined that there won’t be a sudden return of the foursome who made some classic songs and brilliant albums.

Obviously there is no one person to blame for the lack of a proper reunion but if I was a betting man I’d put a huge wager on Damon Albarn being the least keen to work together with the rest of the band. He is the most successful of the lot of them, being better known in America as one of the brains behind cartoon band Gorillaz, so why would he really want to go back and risk failure with Blur at this stage?

The fans want it but it seems the band, or at least one of them does not. Shame on you Damon!

I blame all the other bands making comebacks. I bet Albarn et al. decided that they didn’t want to be another reforming comeback band!

That’s a very good point Phil, I hadn’t even thought of that.

Damon in particular has always struck me as a leader rather than a follower. Reuniting at this stage would hardly be innovative would it.

Maybe next year when all the other bands have split up again ;)

they totally should make another album, Oasis is..hell it’ll be the battle of britpop circa 2008! They’ll get ton of publicity, blur might make it back to mainstream..

sean, everyone is over that stupid brawl between the two bands. Albarn definitely is and has grown up since then. Besides, he does want to force a record that might be crap. Money isn’t all they want.
