British Artists Selling Big In Europe | Coldplay, Katie Melua, Robbie Williams All Favourites
According to The BPI (British Phonographic Industry), artists from the UK are dominating album sales in both France and Germany. These 2 countries make up the 4th and 5th largest markets for recorded music, and British artists such as Coldplay, Katie Melua and Robbie Williams are selling huge amounts in both countries.
The BPI claim that “the UK’s share of recorded music market in both countries hit a four-year high last year.” Katie Melua’s ‘Piece by Piece’ was the 2nd best selling album in Germany in 2006, a fact which may have swayed her decision to play at Live Earth Germany.
23 of the 100 top selling albums in Germany were by UK acts, with bands such as Coldplay and Depeche Mode also featuring strongly. The debut albums from both Corinne Bailey-Rae and James Morrison also came in the Top 100.
In France, a country hardly renowned for loving all things British, one in ten of all albums sold is by a British artist. James Blunt’s ‘Back to Bedlam’ was the biggest selling album in France last year. Well, I never said the French had good taste now did I? Robbie Williams, Mr Rehab himself, had 3 titles in the UK artists Top 20. They’ve redeemed themselves a bit there I suppose.

BPI Chief Executive Geoff Taylor told BBC News:-
“Music is one of the UK’s great cultural and economic exports.”
“The fact that UK labels are gaining an increasing share of these major international markets demonstrates the diversity and quality of new British artists.“
I have to agree with the suit from the BPI, music is probably the UK’s greatest export, and has been since The Beatles invaded America over 40 years ago. There seems to be a new wave of British artists whose popularity extends beyond our borders and reaches across the world. Now, if just a few more of them could break the good ol’ USA, I’d be a happy man!
