British Summer Festival Cancelled - Wax:On Live Organisers Blame Global Recession
The British summer festival season is almost upon us, but two pieces of news show that it may not be quite as good a year as normal on the scene.
Not only has one festival been canned, The Zutons have criticised the biggest of them all, Glastonbury, which I’ll be posting about later.
The Wax:On Live festival isn’t one I had ever heard of until this morning when the news that it had been cancelled came through on my news reader, but still it’s a shame to see it bite the dust.
According to NME, the festival was due to be held on May 31st in Leeds, but has now been cancelled due to the recession. No, I’m not joking, the organisers are blaming the world economic downturn for the festival’s demise.
A statement on Waxonlive.com explained:
“The festival fell victim not to poor ticket sales or lack of support and dedication, but to the credit crunch that has the UK in the grip of an economic stranglehold.”
“This morning we have been informed that due to circumstances in the global financial market place and its knock on effect, the event has become unsustainable. We threw everything we had at the event to try and make it go ahead and we’re really disappointed we couldn’t see it through.”
Reading between the lines, I take that to mean no-one had bought any tickets because they are all supposedly skint. Or it could be that the organisers stop making excuses and realise that the event just wasn’t appealing enough to festival-goers.
Bands expected to play the festival were Primal Scream, Reverend And The Makers and Hercules And Love Affair. Club nights associated with the festival are still set to go ahead in Leeds, Newcastle and Brighton.
