Coldplay Confirm New Album Coming In 2009

A couple of weeks ago we reported on the rumours that Coldplay were preparing to throw out their usual strategy of keeping the fans waiting while they endlessly tinker on making the perfect album, and preparing material for a new album in 2009 - just a year after Viva La Vida was released.
The story has now been confirmed by lead singer Chris Martin. He was speaking to R.E.M. frontman Michael Stipe on BBC 6 Music when he revealed details of the future releases Coldplay have planned. According to Digital Spy, he said:
“We’re going to put an EP out at Christmas called ‘Prospekts March’. And we’re going to release an album next December to end the decade.”
The original rumour indicated that the band had produced such an abundance of material for Viva La Vida that some of it will form the basis of the next album, but I now think it’s more likely to be on the new EP. Coldplay are therefore more likely to write new material for the next full studio album.
This also seems to indicate the rumours over the reasoning for a virtual rush-release (at least in terms of Coldplay’s history) as being a way to leave EMI quickly. Paul McCartney, Radiohead, and the Rolling Stones have all left over the past year, and Coldplay would just be another victim to the Terra Firma buyout.
I always welcome new material from Coldplay, so this is good news for me. I’m also pleased to see that Chris Martin seems to have dropped his perfectionist ways that delayed the release of X&Y.
