Daniel Powter’s ‘Bad Day’ Most Played Song In UK - Beating Kelly Clarkson & James Blunt

by Dave Parrack on July 16th, 2008

Daniel Powter Bad DayI’m a fan of almost every kind of music, and regard myself to have a wide music taste. However, some genres are much more mainstream than others, and get much more exposure. Consequently, some songs seem to be played to death, while others seem never to get any exposure, despite being brilliant.

You know what I mean: there are some songs which you hear absolutely everywhere you go, and they get played on the radio, on television, in pubs, clubs, shops, public venues, and everywhere else you can positively imagine. And this can carry on way beyond when the songs have fallen out of the chart, and seemingly outlived their popularity.

The latest research by the Performing Rights Society shows which songs us Brits have had to endure outliving their time in the spotlight, with a top ten of the most played songs in the UK over the last five years. And here they are:

1. Daniel Powter - ‘Bad Day’
2. Kelly Clarkson - ‘Because Of You’
3. James Blunt - ‘You’re Beautiful’
4. Scissor Sisters - ‘I Don’t Feel Like Dancin”
5. Snow Patrol - ‘Chasing Cars’
6. Maroon 5 - ‘This Love’
7. Take That - ‘Shine’
8. Corinne Bailey Rae - ‘Put Your Record On’
9. Will Young - ‘Leave Right Now’
10. Gwen Stefani - ‘The Sweet Escape’

This list contains some brilliant tracks, and some absolutely crap ones. The latter of which make me almost ashamed to be British, But even the good songs in the list really should have been killed off long ago. Surely there are enough new songs released each week to prevent these same songs played over and over again?

What’s even worse is that a British artist didn’t even come top, with Canadian Daniel Powter securing the top spot with the blandly middle-of-the-road Bad Day. American Kelly Clarkson came second with Because Of You, another bland song.

The highest-ranking Brit is James Blunt, which isn’t a very good indictment on the state of British music, although I must admit to being a sucker for You’re Beautiful. Other Brits to make the top ten are Snow Patrol, Take That, Corinne Bailey Rae, and Will Young.

Plays on TV, radio, websites and in venues were used to collate the chart, which goes to explain why some absolutely dire tracks made the list. What we really need is some of the brilliant indie tracks released each week to be pushed more, rather than this nonsense, but that’s probably just wishful thinking on my part.
