Former Darkness Frontman Justin Hawkins Prepares For Comeback With Hot Leg
Justin Hawkins was for the space of about a year the hottest man in British rock. Not in looks you understand, as unfortunately for him he is one of the ugliest men to have ever been in a band, although Shane MacGowan from The Pogues does make it a close-run thing.
The Darkness were huge for the space of almost exactly a year between 2003 and 2004, blowing everyone away with début album Permission To Land. Yes, it was cheesy nonsense that sounded like it belonged back in the 1970s, but the lyrics were bang up to date and the band injected a bit of much-needed fun back in to the British music scene.
And then it all went horribly wrong, with Hawkins being admitted to a rehab clinic after the second album One Way Ticket To Hell… And Back flopped and he admitted he had drink and drugs problems. But he’s now on his way back, and has formed a new band.
Called Hot Legs, the group are setting out on a small tour, and are said to be putting the finishing touches to their début album.
Hawkins is a very talented songwriter and so I wouldn’t be surprised if lightning strikes twice and his new band also become massive overnight successes. However, his voice may be a problem, as unless he has changed his style a bit from the over-the-top high-pitched Bee Gee sound, Hot Leg will likely sound like The Darkness Mark 2.

He was ugly for sure. reminded me of Freddy Mercury ugly. The music I found quite annoying and almost sickening but it was still in a sort of “Shhh, don’t let my friend catch me listening to this” fun way.
Drugs are have become an escalated epidemic in some parts. Luckily a lot of bands see them as a problem for their performances and focus due to the digital age. Bands have to work much harder than their predecessors and drugs are just a set back…but alcohol is still a big thing,
Good for him to move on. If only Amy Winehouse could work on this problem in her career, she could maybe move forward musically. She was once almost very attractive. Now she looks pretty rough and I can only imagine how much her live performances suffer.
