Free Coldplay Single ‘Violet Hill’ Downloaded By 600,000 People In First 24 Hours

When Coldplay decided to let everyone know they were back by releasing the first single, Violet Hill, from new album, Viva La Vida or Death And All His Friends, as a free download, they must have known it would be huge. But I wonder if they knew quite how huge it would be, and in such a short space of time.

The single premièred on radio on Tuesday, and became available as a free download from their official website Coldplay.com at the same time.

NME are reporting that in the first 12 hours it was downloaded by 300,000 people, and that doubled over the next 12 hours, to make it 600,000 in 24 hours. That’s a pretty incredible figure, especially when the free download is going to be available for a week in total.

Anyone who doesn’t download it for free by May 6th will have to pay for it when it’s then released as a normal digital single. The album will be released on June 12th, with two free shows, one in London, and one in New York coming soon after to promote the release.
