Free Downloads Of Blur Demos For ‘Parklife’ Album | Relive Some Classic Britpop Tunes

by Dave Parrack on September 8th, 2007

Blur Parklife Album CoverBlur were one of my favourite Britpop bands of the early 1990s, and my fandom carried on from there until they split up. I was one of the many people who had one leg in both camps during the great Oasis Vs Blur days of old, liking both bands equally, but for different reasons.

With talk of the original line up getting back together to record again, a website has unearthed 4 early demo versions from the album Parklife.

Dead Flowers is offering a free download of ‘Parklife’, ‘Girls And Boys’, ‘Clover Over Dover’ and ‘To The End’. Click here for the first 2, and here for the other 2 downloadable tracks.

Parklife is an interesting one as it features Damon Albarn doing the virtual speaking part which ended up being recorded by British actor Phil Daniels in the final version. It needed Phil Daniels to make it the song it ended up being, as this version just doesn’t grab me the way the track that ended up on the album does.

Girls And Boys meanwhile has all the elements which ended up on the final track, just without the bells, whistles and cleaning up that a studio session does. This track was one of the first I heard from the group back when I was still a teenager, and all I can remember is the dodgy video.

Clover Over Dover was never my favourite track on the album but listening to this version actually makes me want to go back and listen to it again. Blur were definitely more original than Oasis and most of the other Britpop bands around at the time. This track is one of those ones that no other band would ever have tackled.

To The End still gives me goosebumps even now, 14 years after I first heard it. There’s just some sort of ethereal quality that this track exudes, and it always conjures up dark thoughts in my mind. This demo version is actually very close to the final cut, but worth listening to none the less.

Blur Original Line Up

Wow, that took me back. Now I just want the whole band to come together and make another album as long lasting as Parklife still is. Graham Coxon, put your differences with Damon aside and get on with it!
