Ivor Novello Awards 2008 Results | Amy Winehouse, Take That, Phil Collins Winners

The Ivor Novello Awards 2008 results are in, with a star studded ceremony held in London tonight. The best of British as well as some American artists have been rewarded and recognised for their song writing talents at the annual celebration of all that is good in music.
This time last month, I highlighted the nominees, which included Brit Music Scene favourites Amy Winehouse, and Take That, both of whom were successful on the night.
Amy Winehouse, nominated for three awards won the big one, with Love Is A Losing Game named as the best song musically and lyrically. Her father Mitch accepted the gong on her behalf:
“Unfortunately Amy couldn’t make it, but she is getting better and sends you all her love. She has asked me to thank the Ivors for being the first to recognise her songwriting talents.”
Getting better? Isn’t she always getting better, like for the last two years? It’s much more likely that she was too busy making videos with Pete Doherty and some baby mice to attend the ceremony, or maybe she was just too pissed.
Rehab, a song which I think is probably the best released by a British artists in recent times, actually lost out to Beyonce and Shakira’s Beautiful Liar in the category for best-selling song.
Take That won a much deserved award to add to their 2008 Brit Awards haul with Shine nabbing the most played song title. Cherry Ghost surprisingly beat Kate Nash and Klaxons to take home the best contemporary song prize for People Help The People.
Phil Collins, who recently seemed to casually announce his retirement during a newspaper interview, which he is later said to have denied, won the international achievement award. He seems to have somewhat confirmed the retirement speculation by saying:
“[This recognition has provided] a full stop”.
“I won’t say anything more, but my priorities in life have taken a considerable change in the past couple of years. I’ve got two little boys and my world revolves around them.”
The Ivor Novello Awards has now been going for an incredible 53 years, and continues to recognise the best there is in song writing talent both in the UK and beyond. Long may it continue.
