John Lydon Brands Pete Doherty A Coward, Amy Winehouse As Aimless Winehouse

by Dave Parrack on August 1st, 2008

Johnny Rotten Spiky HairI love and hate John Lydon aka Johnny Rotten in equal measures. Yes, he’s over the hill and should have stopped ranting on stage as lead singer of the Sex Pistols a long time ago. And yes, he only says things to cause controversy and buy himself and his band some cheap publicity. But he gives me some great stuff to write about.

His latest little rant comes in an interview with the Daily Record newspaper ahead of his headline act at the Live At Loch Lomond festival this weekend. Acts playing at the festival include Groove Armada, Stereo MCs, Roisin Murphy, The Happy Mondays, Ocean Colour Scene, and Idlewild, but Lydon decided to talk about just two people instead - Pete Doherty and Amy Winehouse.

On Doherty, he said:

“Doherty’s got trapped in a publicity campaign that has run out of order.”

“Another fool who is given a golden opportunity to do something wonderful in his life and he’d rather be selfish and cowardly. Drugs are the modus operandi of the coward.”

“People like him and Amy Winehouse are getting it wrong as usual.”

But he saved the bulk of his vitriol for Ms. Winehouse (or should that be Mrs Fielder-Civil) herself, raving:

“Poor old Amy. Aimless Winehouse would be a better term. I love all kinds of music but the one thing I have never done is imitate black music in her idiotic way.”

“There’s not a single word that means anything. It’s not like these songs are deeply moving or inspirational or cultural in any way you could find useful.”

“And the cover up for her which is probably the guilt trip is that she requires vast amounts of drugs to hide the fact that she is fake.”

Harsh, but maybe fair. It can certainly be argued that Winehouse has indeed imitated black music to foster her own career, but then don’t all great singers and artists use influences and then skilfully fold them in to their own act?

Lydon went on to say a lot more, covering subjects such as folk music, punk music, Glastonbury, and Coldplay. The problem is, because he wrapped all of the sensible stuff up in a few choice sentences about two troubled but talented singers, that is where the attention is going to focus.

Another day - another diatribe from John Lydon.

I think you got it right at the top of the post, Dave. Lydon’s virtually irrelevant in musical terms these days, and his only claim to fame are these attention-seeking statements he drops every now and then.

I’d love to know what Lydon has done recently that’s “deeply moving or inspirational or cultural”. He’s trading on old glories, that’s all.
