Kate Nash - Mouthwash | New Single & Video Review From ‘Made Of Bricks’ Album

by Dave Parrack on September 9th, 2007

Kate Nash Made Of BricksI think I’m in love, and not just with this song, but Kate Nash as well… I just hope my girlfriend is understanding.I don’t think it matters too much seeing as Kate is a gorgeous singer, and I’m not.

There’s just something about this girl though, I don’t know if its her freckles, her voice or her kookiness, but I think she’s great.

But enough about my crush on Kate Nash, we’re here to take a look at her new single and video ‘Mouthwash’. Kate has had a preposterously fast rise to the top, with this her second single being eagerly awaited.

After the immediate success of first single ‘Foundations’ which I reviewed here on Brit Music Scene, her brilliant debut album ‘Made Of Bricks’ was rush released last month.

I adore this song, almost as much as I adore Kate herself. To me, it’s even better than ‘Foundations’ and that was one of the catchiest songs of the year so far. That is if you like Ms Nash. I’m pretty sure from talking to friends and reading other reviews that she is one of those artists which prompt love and hate in equal measure, there’s very little middle ground.

I love the way the song is built almost entirely around the piano, with the drums complimenting rather than overpowering. It’s instantly catchy, having you swaying along on the first listen. Although Kate Nash is more Indie than anything else, it’s done with a Pop sensibility which drags her instantly in to the mainstream.

The video works really well, showing Kate in her natural environment sat a piano pushing out great pop tunes. The background characters on roller skates look like they’re from the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical Starlight Express, but I don’t really know why they’re there.

The lyrics sum Kate’s style up perfectly, with her looking at herself in a mirror and describing what she sees. She’s just an ordinary girl, living her life, and not really trying to put on any airs and graces.

Lines such as “This, is my body, covered in skin, and not all of it you can see” are maybe a bit of a dig at those girls who feel the need to show off their bodies at every opportunity. The repeating chorus of “And I’m singing uh-oh on a Friday night” should be really annoying and I’m sure some people will think that, but me, I love it, and can’t get it out of my head.

If you haven’t already guessed I love this song, the album ‘Made Of Bricks’ that it comes from, and the lady herself. I’ve got tickets booked to see her in November, and if she comes to your town I urge you to do the same. This is a girl going places, and the only way is up for her.

‘Mouthwash’ is released on September 17th in the UK, and deserves to be number 1, so make it happen! It’s also the same day as both the Big Brother twins Sam & Amanda release their ‘Barbie Girl’ cover, and Babyshambles make their comeback with ‘Delivery’.
