Led Zeppelin Working On New Material
I’ve spoken quite passionately about the possibility of Led Zeppelin reuniting properly over the past year on Brit Music Scene.
Ever since the legendary rock group reformed for a one-off show at London’s 02 Arena last December in support of the Ahmet Ertegun Foundation, a full reunion tour has seemed tantalisingly close. But so far, nothing.
The big problem seems to be Robert Plant, who is happy to be doing his own thing now, and has clearly moved on from Led Zeppelin. Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones seem to be much happier to at least discuss the possibility of getting back together full-time.
Now, thanks to an interview Jason Bonham gave to Detroit radio station WCSX, it appears that the two of them (along with original drummer John Bonham’s son) have been writing new material in the studio.
And there is now hope that this material could lead to a full album making its way on the street… eventually.
The full interview is available on the WCSX website, but NME has transcribed the important parts. Jason Bonham said:
“I’ve been working with Jimmy and John Paul and trying [out] some new material. I don’t know what it will be, but it will be something. At the moment, all I know is I have the great pleasure to go and jam with the two guys and start work on some material.”
“When I get there [in the studio] I never ask any questions. If I get a phone call to go and play, I enjoy every moment of it. Whatever it ends up as, to ever get a chance to jam with two people like that, it is a phenomenal thing for me. It’s my life. It’s what I’ve dreamed about doing.”
“[The] possibility of doing something [like an album] is on the cards. I really felt it was on the cards from the moment we walked offstage at the O2 [Arena]. Lots of politics [would need to] get ironed out [before an album could be made].”
This is brilliant news, and more than I could have expected. A world tour is one thing, but new material from led Zeppelin would be even better in my opinion. However, it’s important to note that this is all happening without Robert Plant, and without Plant, it’s not Led Zeppelin.
I jokingly said that Leona Lewis could stand in for Plant and do a decent job following her performance of Whole Lotta Love at the closing ceremony of the Olympics. But really, I wouldn’t even be happy with Dave Grohl, as brilliant as he is. Plant is the man that’s needed.
Unfortunately, it seems that he is too busy doing his own stuff to bother teaming up again with Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones, and even the lure of oodles of money is just not enough. Until Plant stops messing around, and comes on board, Led Zeppelin are still dead.
