Led Zeppelin World Tour Back On | Has Jimmy Page Talked Robert Plant Around?

by Dave Parrack on May 12th, 2008

Led Zeppelin World Tour Back On

The speculation surrounding the will they, won’t they, please, I hope they do, Led Zeppelin world tour rumour mill has taken a new twist today, with Whitesnake singer David Coverdale claiming that it IS going to happen, it’s just a case of when.

This story goes right back to when Led Zeppelin reformed for a one off concert at the London 02 Arena in support of the Ahmet Ertegun Foundation late last year. Ever since, there has been numerous stories about the possibility of a full world tour happening.

First we had Jason Bonham describe calls for a world tour as “greedy”. Then Dave Grohl expressed an interest in drumming for the band if it ever did happen. I’m not sure how the late John Bonham would feel about his son being fired for Grohl, but I for one think it would be awesome.

Then Jimmy Page went on record to say that a full world tour could well be happening, but it wouldn’t be until after September, due to Plant being busy on his current project with Alison Krauss. Unfortunately Robert Plant then apparently said no to the world tour, despite rumours they were offered £100 million each to do it.

And so here we are today, and even though it comes from a secondary source in the form of Whitesnake frontman David Coverdale, it does at least offer hope to all of us who missed out before, and want another chance to see the legendary British rockers one last time before either they, or we die.

Coverdale told The Mirror:

“I’m expecting a call from Jimmy any day asking my band Whitesnake to support them on their world tour. Am I on board? You bet. Probably worth billions!”

“Unlike rolling out the wheelchairs with the umpteenth Rolling Stones world tour, a Led Zeppelin tour will be incredible.”

A source then added:

“A couple of months ago, it looked unlikely because Robert was against the idea. But now it looks almost certain. It would either be at the end of this year or early 2009.”

Oh my God, please make it happen. Maybe Page has finally managed to talk Plant around to the idea that a final massive payday would indeed be worth it. Although if it really is to be at the end of this year or early next, an announcement would have to made pretty damn soon.

This could of course just be Coverdale doing nothing more than wishful thinking, and so until any official announcement happens, I won’t be holding my breath. There have already been too many false dawns for me to take this one as 100% true.

Two Jimmys and the Phantom Drummer

Doesn’t it seem more than a bit strange that after four decades or so the Zep have not come up with a proper fit to replace their drummer? There’s only one drummer, that I know of, which was Bonham’s equal. A real musician who not only had the artistic touch, skills, and power to do a proper job of playing with Led Zeppelin but had something to say on his own, without being some Bonham-wannabe. The drummer in question went on a very long sabbatical, about the same time Bonham passed on. And, within a year after he was invited to play with the other Jimmy (Hendrix, that is). Sadly that never came about, as Hendrix went on a sort of sabbatical of his own. One wonders if Señor Page, still recalls his name or what band the phantom drummer toured with? Fact is, no matter how hard most people try to guess his identity, it’s doubtful that fans & musicians these days would know who the identity of this once awesome and innovative drummer. Why wouldn’t they? He didn’t play long enough to cash in on his pay-day. And, the excellent band he played with sailed off into the sunset of one hit wonders.

    Cheers!
