Maximo Park - ‘Karaoke Plays’ Video Review
Any regular Brit Music Scene readers will already be well aware of my love for Maximo Park, and that isn’t going to change any time soon.
However, when reviewing their new single Karaoke Plays, I will be fair and give an honest opinion, because, well although it’s ok, it’s not my favourite on the album by any means.
I was actually surprised they chose to release this as a single, because I don’t think it’s that strong a song. The video is fun though, completely lacking the band, and instead showing a weekend coach trip for a group of youngsters with a strange ending.
The thing is it’s by no means a bad song, but when taken in context with the rest of the album (Our Earthly Pleasures) that it comes from, it’s not the song I would have chosen to release.
The style is very much Maximo, with heartfelt lyrical genius over the top of an intricate guitar track.
I’ve said before that I find Maximo Park a very visual band, due to the unique look and feel they have, so not showing them in the video for one of their songs could be a mistake.
Having said that, it is a good video though, with the story of a weekend of drink and debauchery gone slightly wrong. In the UK, it’s just a typical weekend in any major city to be honest.
As a single this may well grow on me, but when I listen to it as part of the album, I must admit it doesn’t stand out. Give me Girls Who Play Guitars any day… quite literally.
