Metallica Inspired By Oasis To Give Up Cocaine | Noel Gallagher Is Ulrich Mentor

Metallica are obviously a heavy metal band. No, scrub that, probably the best heavy metal band there has ever been. They are certainly one of the longest running and most mainstream. Oasis, on the other hand, are a Britpop band who have been brilliant and average in fairly equal measure over the years.
As different as the two bands may at first seem, there are a number of similarities. They have both released some truly great albums and some truly awful ones; they both have outspoken band members who give many more interviews than usual in the build up to an album release; they both did a lot of cocaine back in the day.
Those last two similarities have recently come together, with Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich telling The Quietus how he gave up taking cocaine after being inspired by Noel Gallagher. He also confesses to being an Oasis fanatic.
“A couple of years ago I was like, ‘You know? Enough of this. I don’t need it’. It was literally something that happened one morning, like ‘Y’know? Fuck that’. I was very impressed with Noel Gallagher: as you know, I’m an Oasis fanatic, and Noel was like [adopts stentorian tone] ‘You know what? No more cocaine!’ and I thought, ‘If he can do it, everybody else can do it’. I had my fun with it, it was always more of a social thing. We were never like rolling around and spending days in bathroom stalls, and peeking out the keyholes of doors for days.”
The first thing to deal with is the fact that Ulrich is an Oasis fanatic: they’re a dying breed these days. I wonder if, like everyone else, Ulrich thinks Oasis were brilliant for two albums, then went a bit crap before coming back with the triumphant Don’t Believe The Truth in 2005?
As for Gallagher being the inspiration for Metallica giving up doing the coke - if the forthcoming Metallica album Death Magnetic turns out to be any good, maybe metal fans will have Gallagher to thank for it.
Maybe Gallagher should have a few words with Amy Winehouse next.
