Muse Working On Fifth Album | Band Not Sure About Conventional Release
The brilliant Muse have started working on songs for their next release, which should, if everything goes to plan, be their fifth studio album. However, the band aren’t yet sure about what form the release will take, be it a conventional album, a series of singles or even a drawn out rock opera!
Muse released Black Holes and Revelations in 2006, and have since been touring like there’s no tomorrow, playing massive gigs in the UK, including their phenomenally successful Wembley dates last year, and a string of dates around the world. Though the tour isn’t officially ending until after the V Festival in August, the band have already taken a break, and are now back hard at work.
Dom Howard spoke to NME after drumming for Razorlight man Andy Burrows last night at a rare solo outing and confirmed the band were working on new material.
“We’ve just started writing songs for the new album, whatever it’s going to be, you know? It’s going great, we just started.”
“We’re right at the tip at the moment and I think the point is that we’ve been on the road for so long… It’s really about getting back together and getting the ball rolling again and seeing whether it’ll roll.”
I can’t wait to hear some new material as Black Holes has taken a bit of a battering over the past two years, with me playing it to death in that time. However, I suppose I’d better prepare myself for the unexpected as this is unlikely to be just another album release.
Muse front man Matt Bellamy said:
“What will come out of that is impossible to say. It may just be albums, but it may be a stream of singles, or it may just be one 50-minute symphony, do you know what I mean? Who knows?”
Bellamy has obviously been inspired by the recent spate of digital experiments, which obviously started with Radiohead and In Rainbows, and most recently saw Coldplay giving away the first single, Violet Hill, from new album Viva La Vida.
Muse have always struck me as an innovative and forward looking band, so who better to look past the record company script of releasing a new album every couple of years to try something new? Whatever form it takes, I personally can’t wait.

Whatever they release, and however they release it… just need to be sooner rather than later!
