Nationwide Mercury Music Prize 2007 Shortlist
The Nationwide Mercury Music Prize is the annual award given to the best album by a British or Irish artist. The shortlist for this year is in and reveals some obvious nominees as well as others I didn’t expect to see in the running.
The Arctic Monkeys are again included, giving the distinct possibility of them being the first band to win the award 2 years running. Dizzee Rascal also gets his 2nd nomination after winning in 2003.
Here’s the full list of nominees for the 2007 Mercury Music Prize with sample tracks from the albums:-
Arctic Monkeys - ‘Favourite Worst Nightmare’
Klaxons - ‘Myths Of The Near Future’
Amy Winehouse - ‘Back To Black’
Maps - ‘We Can Create’
The View - ‘Hats Off To The Buskers’
Jamie T - ‘Panic Prevention’
Dizzee Rascal - ‘Maths & English’
Young Knives - ‘Voices of Animals And Men’
Fionn Regan - ‘The End Of History’
New Young Pony Club - ‘Fantastic Playroom’
Basquiat Strings - ‘Basquiat Strings’
Bat For Lashes - ‘Fur And Gold’
The last 2 are the definite surprise inclusions along with Fionn Regan. The thing is just because they are lesser known than some of the others on the list doesn’t lessen their chances of winning the prize. We’ve often seen in the past a propensity to give the award to a little known artist, with Antony and the Johnsons being a huge surprise winner in 2005.
My money would be on the Klaxons who have had an incredible year and been at the forefront of the new musical genre known as New Rave. I love the Arctic Monkeys and The Young Knives and would also dearly like to see either of them win.
The awards ceremony will be held at London’s Grosvenor House Hotel on September 4th. Who would you like to see win? Listen to the samples and see who you think is most deserving of the prize, and then let me know in the comments box, I always like hearing my readers opinions!
