New Coldplay Album To Be Released Next Year? | ‘Viva La Vida’ Follow-Up Rushed Out

The new Coldplay album, Viva La Vida, has only been out for around two months, but already there is talk of the next Coldplay album. The band reportedly have most of the album already in the bag and could release it next year as a surprise rush-release.
The Sun are reporting that most of the songs for the next album have already been recorded due to the highly-productive studio sessions with uber-producer Brian Eno for Viva La Vida.
Coldplay are one of the few massive British acts remaining at the EMI record label, with Paul McCartney, Radiohead, and the Rolling Stones having left since the company was taken over by finance firm Terra Firma.
There is a possibility that Coldplay could rush-release their next album and then quickly follow it up with a greatest hits compilation in order to complete their commitments to the label and enable them to leave for another label.
A source at EMI apparently said:
“The Viva La Vida sessions were incredibly fruitful. They gelled brilliantly with Brian and recorded much more music than they could fit on one album.
“The majority of the follow-up is already in the can, though they will have to go back into the studio at some point to add a few more songs.
“Standard industry contracts tend to be for six albums, so if they provide some kind of compilation after their next album they will be free agents and able to renegotiate their contract or head out on their own.”
Chris Martin has even hinted at a quick turnaround for a new release when discussing a collaboration with Kylie Minogue called Luna which didn’t make it on to the final cut of Viva La Vida. He said:
“It will be on a record we will put out in 2009.”
I’m really not sure how to take this rumour. It would certainly make sense if the band have a wealth of songs already recorded and are keen to leave EMI as quickly as possible, but that’s not entirely clear.
A spokesperson for EMI has since denied the claim, telling the NME:
“Contrary to inaccurate reports in The Sun, Coldplay are signed to a long-term record deal with EMI and are committed to produce a number of albums. The band’s relationship with EMI is both long-term and positive.”
A year between studio albums would also be a massive change of strategy for Coldplay who usually take a number of years to work on a new album. In fact, it was three years between the releases of X&Y and Viva La Vida. Martin is notorious for being a perfectionist and not releasing anything until it’s spot on.
