No New Amy Winehouse Album In 2008 - Singer Cancels Bahamas Recording Session

by Dave Parrack on April 12th, 2008

No New Amy Winehouse Album In 2008The chances of a new album from Amy Winehouse being released in 2008 took a downward turn today when it emerged that the singer had cancelled a recording session in the Bahamas.

According the The Sun, Island Records had booked a trip to the Bahamas for Winehouse, where she was meant to start laying down the bulk of her new album with producer Saleem Remi.

Remi is the man behind Winehouse’ first album Frank, and also had a big hand in the hugely successful Back To Black, which although being released back in 2006, is still Top Ten in the UK Album Charts.

Winehouse decided not to go on the trip, and is instead spending time in the studio with friend and producer Mark Ronson working on the theme tune for Quantum Of Solace, the new James Bond film.

A friend told the newspaper:

“Island wanted to get her away from it all and thought it would be great surroundings for her. It was a very expensive trip and it was hoped they would make some decent progress recording the album. But Amy pulled out at the last minute.”

“The album was planned for late 2008, but her label is now privately admitting it’s unlikely to happen until 2009. She’s not the kind of artist you can just stick in the studio for a month and get an album done. And I now think early 2009 would be a good result.”

Although it’s a shame that the millions of fans aroudn the world who bought and enjoyed the Back To Black album will not be getting a follow up for another year, maybe this will be a good thing in the long run.

Last month I reported that friends who had been treated to a sneak preview of Winehouse’ new material had described it as “suicidal music”, and were fearing for her mental health.

The delay in recording could allow Winehouse time to recover from her ongoing problems, and maybe even lessen the depressive tone of the material in to a more mainstream album.
