Radiohead Pretended To Be Kula Shaker - Manic Street Preachers Condemn Them

Radiohead apparently pretended to be Kula Shaker (amongst others) in an effort to stop In Rainbows from leaking online before release.

Bassist Colin Greenwood revealed to NME:

“It felt like a gigantic risk. Like Mission Impossible, almost. We destroyed all CDs after every day of recording. And on the master we’d always write a name which probably nobody would listen to if we had lost it; ‘Eagles: Greatest Hits’, ‘Kula Shaker demos’, ‘Phill Collins hip-hop covers’.”

Personally, I don’t know what’s worse: Having your new album leaked online before release, or having to call yourself Kula Shaker.

The Manic Street Preachers meanwhile, have criticized Radiohead for allowing fans to choose the amount of money they wanted to pay for In Rainbows.

Nicky Wire told the Daily Star:

“Fair play to Radiohead for doing something different. It’s certainly great for publicity but I think it kind of demeans music.”

“Music used to be a market, now it’s all gone digital. It’s worrying and it seems to be the way of the world at the moment. Sales are doing well everywhere else.”

“Cinema is doing well, video games are doing well but music isn’t. The free download phenomenon is ruining the industry.”

I think they’re talking out of their backsides personally. The digital music market, is still a market after all, just using the technology at hand to deliver it more easily.

I also don’t agree that downloads are ruining the music industry, although illegal file sharing will be hitting bands hardest. The thing is, the industry itself needs to wake up to the possibilities and offer customers what they want, at a price they can afford.

If that was done, then no-one would risk arrest by downloading copyrighted materials.
