Rihanna & New Order Mashup Video | ‘Shut Up & Drive’ Vs ‘Blue Monday’

by Dave Parrack on September 4th, 2007

I have a great mash up for you today, with New Order superbly mixed with Rihanna. I’m not a big fan of Rihanna, in fact it’s fair to say I hate her.

‘Umbrella’ was a good song, and I liked it the first 20 times I heard it, but after 10 weeks at the top of the UK Charts I’d had my fill of the song and the woman. That’s tainted my view of her for ever I fear.

New Order on the other hand, I love them. It’s fitting that just weeks after Tony Wilson died, and had a website dedicated to him, that one of his discoveries in the Manchester music scene gets sampled and concocted with a current hit.

This video not only proves how good a band New Order are and what a good song ‘Blue Monday’ is, but also how British music continues to be an inspiration around the world.

It’s a very well done mash up, with both the song mix and video mix working extremely well throughout. There’s a couple of websites claiming that this mash up somehow proves that Rihanna stole ‘Blue Monday’ and reused it on ‘Shut Up & Drive’ but that’s absolute bullshit. It just fits.

There are only so many beats and riffs that can be invented by musicians so well fitting songs are bound to crop up increasingly these days. As a fan of mash ups I welcome the concocting of brand new songs from old ones, even if it is Rihanna.

Yeah, I would like to believe that Rihanna is merely using that song for inspiration, however her earlier song “SOS” is nearly an EXACT duplicate, bass line and overall musically, not lyrically of the 80’s hit “Tainted Love”. This fact coupled with the blindingly obvious background music from “Blue Monday,” proves to me that she is a no talent HACK who goes around stealing hit songs from an earlier era and putting new lyrics atop them. If she admitted that she used the songs and she either paid for their usage or gave them credit, then I would see this as acceptable omage shall we say to the previous songs. HOwever since she merely packages them as hers and capitalizes on the creativity of previous pop hits, she is scum, and not worthy of being played on the airwaves.

Its not just that the songs flow well together or fit well together. Parts of New Order’s song are there in Rihanna’s song, like the chord progression during her chorus. So, I can’t agree with the statement that “its absolute bullshit. It just fits.” I think there is better proof than the mashup video - check out this clip on youtube…
