Rihanna Still Number 1 in the UK Charts | ‘Umbrella’ Sets New Record
I can’t quite believe it but Rihanna, with a little help from Jay-Z, is still Number 1 in the UK singles chart with that bloody record ‘Umbrella’. That’s 10 consecutive weeks that the R’n'B diva has been sat in the top spot, and I’ve got to wonder at this point, who on earth is buying the damn thing?
I’m not saying it’s a bad song, I actually like it, but after this long, it’s starting to grate slightly, on both my ears and brain. It’s not like it’s a classic opus which we’ll still be listening to in 10 years is it?! The first time I heard it, I didn’t like it, but it grew on me and yeah, I must admit, it’s a classy slice of catchy Pop/R’n'B. But 10 weeks? Come on people, sort it out, it’s time to stop the madness (and I don’t mean the 80s ska band).
After this amount of time, surely everyone who is going to buy it, has already done so. How is it staying at the top? I can only imagine there is a massive slew of people who only listen to music once every 2 months and all of a sudden heard this song and thought “I must buy that“.
In this day and age, staying there at number 1 for this length of time is quite an achievement, as the singles charts tends to be a lot faster moving than it used to be, with singles going straight in at number 1 on the week of release only to be superseded the following Sunday by the next hit. I can’t see Rihanna’s feat being repeated for a very long time.
But people, please, I’m urging you to stop the madness, go out and buy something different, there are tons of good singles out right now. Kate Nash nearly managed it last week, selling almost as many copies of ‘Foundations’ as Umbrella did but she didn’t quite make it. Now is the time to get your asses out there on the high street and claim the UK charts back from the invading American and put a British artist back on top.
Knowing my luck, Rihanna will fall this week, only to be replaced by Fergie, currently sitting at number 4 with ‘Big girls don’t cry’. But anything is better than Rihanna, because as good as the record is, if I hear it one more time, I think I’ll slit my wrists.
