Sam & Amanda - Barbie Girl | Big Brother Twins Debut Single and Video Review

by Dave Parrack on October 15th, 2007

Barbie Girl has never been a good song, be it the original by Swedish cheesemeisters Aqua, or any of the covers and spoof versions. I’ll admit to singing it on Singstar occasionally when I’m cajoled and blackmailed by friends, but that’s it.

So whoever decided that the God awful tune was ripe for a re-release deserves shooting. The fact that they then coupled the song with those annoying pink twins Sam and Amanda from the UK Big Brother house just piled on the misery. My ears will never recover.

It’s been ten years since Aqua originally released this song, and it hasn’t improved has it. I didn’t think it would ever be possible for someone to release a worse version, but Sam and Amanda have achieved the impossible and released a steaming pile of crap on to the World.

This song actually came out last week, but I couldn’t bring myself to review it until now. Normally I would only review songs, albums and artists I actually like or think have some musical ability.

I’m here on Brit Music Scene to educate the World about British music and increase its popularity, so highlighting crap isn’t something I’d normally do. But I needed to draw attention to this steaming mess to stop any other poor sap wasting their money on it, and for anyone wondering how it reached number 26 in the charts, that not all us Brits are stupid enough to like it.

The song is absolute rubbish, from the cheesy dance beat laid over the original tune, to the vapid and vacuous lyrics. And then Sam and Amanda’s singing kicks in. The problem is they clearly can’t sing. How they got a £1 million record deal is beyond me.

The fact that every note they sing has been put through a vocalizer to get it in tune just proves how atrocious it must have sounded before being engineered to within an inch of it’s life.

And then there’s the video, which instead of featuring two budding and talented pop stars in the making, just has two members of the public who have had fame foisted on them. The twins look like a couple of rabbits caught in the headlights of a car, and in many ways I which they were.

I’ve never seen two less talented individuals in my life. They can’t act, can’t sing, can’t dance, and can’t even talk in anything approaching English.

Don’t buy this single, you’ll only encourage the vacuous twins and ensure there’s a follow up. God forbid it, if there is, I won’t be responsible for my actions.

Cajoled & blackmailed? You’re having a laugh arent you? Go on, tell them how you always want to sing Barbies part!

RE: Sam & Amanda… I’ve seen similar talentlessness in the Cheeky Girls.

I think my brain just melted. ‘Cause, you know that song didn’t need to be any more Techno.

    Too…much…pink. *thud*
