Simply Red To Split In 2009… Hooray!

Simply Red have announced that they are to split in 2009. I’ll be honest and admit it was kind of a surprise to me that they were even still going!

Lead singer Mick Hucknall has said that current album Stay will be their last, and that they will go their seperate ways after their new tour.

“I’ve kind of decided that the 25 years is going to be enough.”

“I’ve just recorded an album that is a tribute to Bobby Bland, a blues and R&B artist. It’s a solo project and I’ve really enjoyed it - so much that I feel the time has come now to just put a book-end to the [Simply Red] story.”

Is it just me that feels an urge to cheer at the top of my voice? I mean Simply Red were good once, for about 6 months in 1985 when they released Money’s Too Tight (To Mention). But really what have they done since?

They had a bit of a resurgence in ‘89 and then another one in ‘95, but they stopped being relevant at least a decade ago. I’m sure Hucknall (pictured) and the band still has it’s hardcore fans who will roundly rip me to pieces for my views but come on, music has moved on a bit from Mick’s awful caterwauling.

Maybe my headline should have been ‘Simply Red have split up and the whole of the country has a party!‘
