Take That - Rule The World | Single And Video Review Of Title Track From ‘Stardust’
I was never really a big fan of Take That the first time around. You can blame that on a combination of being male, but not gay or pre-pubescent. But, even though I’m now older and wiser I love what they’ve been doing since they reformed last year.
Maybe it’s because they are also older and wiser, and don’t dress up in leather chaps and expose their chests at every opportunity now, or maybe it’s because their new batch of songs is kick ass. The only thing missing now is Robbie Williams, but I still think he’ll rejoin one day, especially as Take That are probably enjoying more success and making more money than him right now.
This is their new song called ‘Rule The World‘, which as well as being one of the catchiest pop songs I’ve heard in a long time, is also the title track from new fantasy film ‘Stardust‘.
It’s a brilliant song, with a chorus to die for. It hits all the right spots of cheesy goodness and sentiment, and works great as a result.
It’s also a very simple song, with not many bells and whistles to take away from the harmonies and simple brilliance. It just proves that you don’t need a whole host of effects and tricks to make a song stand out from the crowd.
The video also works really well, even though it too is very simple and understated. The camera pans around showing Gary Barlow, Mark Owen, Howard Donald, and Jason Orange as they sing, and that’s all it really needs. It actually compliments rather than detracts from the song.
Obviously it also has scenes from the film wedged in but I can put up with that when the soundtrack is this good.
Gary Barlow may have been a twat in the past but when he’s capable of writing songs as good as this, I can pretty much forgive him all of his past transgressions. This is a definite number one, or my name isn’t Dave.
