The Isle Of Skye Music Festival Cancelled After Organisers Racked Up Huge Debts
Scotland has become a kind of Mecca for music festivals and outdoor concerts over the last few years, with T In The Park, Rock Ness and The Isle Of Skye festivals all being hyped up and getting great bands performing.
Unfortunately, despite the hype, the last one on that list is no more, after the organisers were forced to cancel this year’s Isle Of Skye festival after racking up huge debts from last year’s event.
The amount of money rumoured is £500,000 ($1 million), and it seems some of last years performers and suppliers have yet to be paid for their efforts last May.
The festival, which is held on the island’s Ashaig airstrip, attracted some big names last year, including Primal Scream, Kasabian and KT Tunstall, but that wasn’t enough to get the crowds through the doors.
The organisers were hoping to attract 8,000 visitors a day but only managed about half that number. Which obviously means there wasn’t enough money in the pot to carry on.
John Gilbertson, director of the festival, told The Scotsman:
“Our intention at present is to start a phoenix company which will allow us to hopefully stage the event again in 2009.
“This will enable us to raise funds which we will put towards paying off existing creditors. We take our responsibilities seriously and this is currently our principal priority.”
Although it’s too far away for me to ever go, I do hope it carries on next year, and that this is just a small blip. The UK has a a reputation for live music, and the many annual festivals are an important part of that.
The big ones like Glastonbury, Reading and Leeds, and V all sell out so quickly, leaving many people without tickets, that we need smaller festivals such as these so that everyone has a chance to see some of their favourite acts in a live setting.
