The Zutons Thank Amy Winehouse For Keeping Them In The Public Eye
I’m always intrigues what bands think when another artist covers one of their tracks. If it gets released, then they’ve obviously given permission for the song to be covered, but what do they really think?
Well, we at least know that The Zutons were pleased with the cover version of Valerie that Mark Ronson and Amy Winehouse released last year, a song they credit with keeping them in the public eye while away recording a new album.
There’s actually debate over which version is better. I plumped for the original by The Zutons when I reviewed them both on Killed By The Video Star. However, I did also praise the Amy Winehouse version, and there wasn’t much in it.
The band’s saxophone player Abi Harding, the sexiest sax player I’ve ever seen, told The Daily Record:
“I loved Amy and Mark’s version of Valerie. I thought it was brilliant and I was flattered.
“We have been out of the game for a couple of years recording the album and it has kept us going. People might have forgotten about us if they hadn’t heard it more, so the timing was perfect.
“I think Amy is great. It is such a good song and all they used from our version was the melody, chords and lyrics. Nothing else is the same. They didn’t even use the main guitar riff the song was written around. It proves to me it is a really good song.
“The first time I heard Amy and Mark’s version, I wasn’t sure. I thought it was mad. But the more I heard it, the more I loved it.”
The Zutons are now back, having taken the time out needed to write their third studio album. The album, titled You Can Do Anything, will be released on June 2nd.
Meanwhile the band will be touring the country as part of MTV’s Spanking New Music tour, which will give fans their first opportunity to hear the new material.
