UK Albums Chart 12/08/2007 | Kate Nash In At Number 1 With ‘Made Of Bricks’

by Dave Parrack on August 13th, 2007

Kate NashThe brilliant Kate Nash finally makes it to number one… but it’s her album which manages it rather than a single. Her debut album ‘Made of Bricks’ which was rush released due to the phenomenal success of ‘Foundations’ has newly entered the charts at number 1, and I’m as pleased as punch for Ms Nash.

The single ‘Foundations’ was kept from the top spot week after week, first by Rihanna and her stinking ‘Umbrella’ and then by Timbaland with his grammatical error laden hit ‘The Way I Are’. No such misfortune for her debut long player though as it sits at the top of the Official UK Album Chart where it belongs.

I’ll be reviewing the album this week, so be sure to check back for my verdict (although maybe you can already tell it’s going to be positive).

Kate Nash’s success has knocked Paul Potts down to number 2 with his ‘One Chance’. Newton Faulkner has stayed at a very impressive number 3 with ‘Hand Built by Robots’, as well as hitting the Top 10 with single ‘Dream Catch Me’.

The other new entry in to the Top 10 is The Coral with ‘Roots and Echoes’. The Coral are a band which never quite seem to make it to the mainstream’s conscious, even though they’ve released some classic tunes over the years. Hopefully this 5th studio album will see them push their way in to the hearts and minds again as their self titles debut did back in 2002, when it was also nominated for the Mercury Music Prize.

The Coral

The Coral haven’t managed to jump above two long stayers in the album charts though, as both Mika and Amy Winehouse are above them. Mika’s ‘Life in Cartoon Motion’ has been hanging around for 27 weeks, and Amy Winehouse’s ‘Back to Black for 39 weeks. I’ve written about both of them this week, with one enjoying a great week in the States and the other a not so good one in London.

Lily Allen is another person who has been in the news this week, after having her visa reportedly taken away at Los Angeles airport. She’s spending her 42nd week in the charts with ‘Alright Still’ proving that though the American authorities might have o love for her, we the British public certainly do.

Ben’s Brother, a band from the UK which I know absolutely nothing about are sitting at 24 with new entry ‘Beta Male Fairytales’. I’ll have to do some research on them because they’ve flown under my radar up until now. Just listening to the single ‘Let Me Out’ on YouTube, I have mixed feelings.

They remind me to a certain extent of The Feeling, one of my favourite British bands from the last year. The lead singer’s voice doesn’t do much for me, but it’s one of those voices which I could grow to love. Hmm, one to watch for sure.
