UK Albums Chart 29/07/2007 | Paul Potts Fends Off Timbaland

by Dave Parrack on July 30th, 2007

Paul Potts Looking DumbEach week here on Brit Music Scene, I’ll be taking a look at the UK Albums Chart in depth to see who the big movers are, who is doing well, and who has fallen from grace. I’ll be using the official Radio 1 Charts for reference, so without further ado, let’s take a look.

Britain’s Got Talent‘ winner Paul Potts stays at the number 1 spot for the 2nd week in a row with ‘One Chance’, fighting off stiff competition from Timbaland, who is up from 5 to 2. I like Paul Potts and when he performed on Britain’s Got Talent, I got goosebumps from his singing. But I don’t think I’d buy the album, which is basically an album of covers.

I’d rather spend my money on a new and upcoming band, who write their own stuff. Having said that, I do think Potts has longer lasting appeal than most of the recent reality TV winners, and good luck to him.

Amy Winehouse is moving back up the charts, with ‘Back to Black’ this week climbing from 8 to 6, and rightly so. It seems the bad publicity she has been receiving of late, mainly involving missed gigs and long stays in pubs hasn’t done her any harm. I guess her recent performance at the Arctic Monkeys gig in Manchester helped gain her some devoted fans too, she did after all turn up on time. First album ‘Frank’ has also re-entered the charts 4 years after it’s initial release.

Garbage make a welcome return to the charts, straight in at number 11 with their greatest hits album ‘Absolute Garbage’. This has some classic songs on it including ‘Queer’, ‘I Think I’m Paranoid’, and ‘Stupid Girl’.

The Enemy, who 2 weeks ago were number 1 have now fallen to number 9. This is a shame because the album is top quality, but it seems their mainstream appeal isn’t living up to the hype. This is the sort of band who will come good on the 2nd album and probably be launched in to the stratosphere, so long as they keep their feet on the ground and don’t implode first.

Cherry Ghost are sitting at number 29, down from 20 last week. I knew this album wouldn’t do that well, even though it’s very good, as the band didn’t seem to get the momentum behind them needed to gain high chart success.

Until next week…
