UK Singles Charts 02/09/2007 | Sean Kingston Now Number 1! James Blunt At 10
What is happening to in the UK right now that makes people go insane enough to buy Sean Kingston’s ‘Beautiful Girls’? I can’t believe it, but yes, it is number 1 right now, moving up from last week’s number 2 position.
Am I missing something here? This guy looks awful, like a black Rik Waller, he can’t sing, every note is slightly off key, and the song is a pile of absolute drivel. And it’s number 1?
Maybe I need to forget about the charts from now, and stick to listening to good music rather than singles that are popular with the chavs and scallies around the country. I can just see those gangs of tracksuit wearing morons walking around with Sean Kingston playing loudly and distorted on their stolen mobile phones.
As I posted the Sean Kingston video last week, I’ll delve in to the rest of the Top 10 for this week’s video. Here we have the dour but ultimately annoyingly catchy James Blunt with new single ‘1973′. It’s actually an ok song, at least he can sing, even if it is in a high pitched girly voice.
This song is like the anti Sean Kingston, a ying to its yang, with the only people buying this the over 50s hormonal women brigade who feel a long lost stirring in their loins every time cheesemeister Blunt comes on the radio. It’s gone straight in at number 10 this week, meaning there are now a plethora of mums listening to it while sat on top of their washing machines on a spin cycle.
In one place above James Blunt this week are Freaks with ‘The Creeps (Get On The Dance Floor)’. To be honest I can’t tell the difference between this song and the last commercial dance hit to make it big and sell shit loads of copies for no reason other than a catchy bass line.
Depending on what school of thought you belong to, you’ll either watch the video yawning, or be dancing around your lounge looking like an absolute loon on speed. I’m in the former camp unsurprisingly.
A new entry in at 14 this week is the King himself, no not Prince Phillip, Elvis Presley! Although I hear that the Queens husband does do a nice Elvis impersonation when he gets a bit drunk. The song in question is ‘Hound Dog’, has been released as part of the 30th anniversary of his death on 16th August 1977.

The next song on the release list is (Let Me Be Your) Teddy Bear which is out today (3rd Sept) in the UK. This will be the 5th of 18 songs released for the anniversary, and you can visit the official website to complete your singles collection.
New in at 19 is the brilliant Scouting For Girls with ‘She’s So Lovely’, a song I’ve been meaning to review for the last 2 weeks. Scouting For Girls are a new British band, and one of the new wave of bands to pick up a following and mild success from their MySpace page.
I love the fact that when you play the song on MySpace, there’s a picture of old school children’s TV presenter Michaela Strachan showing, now that is inspired!
The Reverend & The Makers are in at number 30 with ‘He Said He Loved Me’, a brilliant piece of Indie Electro Funk. I must admit to not knowing much about this band but they’re one that seems to building up to something big. Don’t be surprised if they are next year’s Klaxons.
The Twang, in at number 34 with ‘Two Lovers’ are a band that continue to grow on me even though I try desperately hard not to like them. They are in the same mould as The Ordinary Boys and Jamie T, with a kind of Ska influenced Indie almost Rap style.
This song isn’t their strongest by any means, and ‘Either Way‘ is a much better indication of what they are capable of as a band. They went down a storm at the recent V Festivals, with the whole crowd singing back the lyrics. Definitely one to watch, but I think their appeal may be limited.
