UK Singles Charts 12/08/2007 | Kleerup Feat. Robyn Goes Straight In At Number 1

by Dave Parrack on August 12th, 2007

Kleerup Featuring Robyn have entered the Official UK Charts this week, going straight in at number one. The song called ‘With Every Heartbeat’ is an electro dance inspired monologue which isn’t the kind of song I expect to see go number one these days. I don’t really like it, although it is catchy in an annoying ‘Crazy Frog’ kind of way.

It just never seems to get going for me, and I’m sat their bored while listening to it. A bit like Marmite, you either love it or hate it, and it seems the record buying public are in the former camp. I’ll stay in the adult, grown up, real music latter group if you don’t mind.

Rihanna is still hanging around the Top Ten, sitting at number 7 in the charts. Why? It’s not even raining much in the UK any more so you can’t even use that excuse.

Hippy acoustic singer songwriter Newton Faulkner jumps from number 16 last week, to a mightily impressive number 8 this week. I’ve kept meaning to review this single but keep forgetting to. I think this guy has a big future, certainly if his debut album follows the plot and quality of this song. He has a haunting voice, and everything just seems to flow so well, from the lyrics to the delivery.

Mika’s ‘Big Girl’ drops from number 9 to 14, meaning he’s yet to repeat anywhere near the amount of airplay and exposure he achieved with ‘Grace Kelly’. It’s a good song, as my review will tell you, but it was never going to be a chart topper.

It’s a novelty song, and I fear Mika is going the way of being a novelty act altogether. I think his next album will determine the direction he’s going in, and his future with it.

Amy Winehouse jumps in to the charts at number 24 with ‘Tears Dry On Their Own’. Despite her problems, depression, drug abuse and subsequent overdose, she’s still chucking out great songs.

I’ve already wished her the best at getting help and back to (black) her best, and I still maintain that. This track just proves the quality of her voice and unique style which is carrying her career around the world, and we need more.

Dizzee Rascal, grind star and rapper extraordinaire follows up a summer of festival appearances, including a guest spot on the Arctic Monkeys Glastonbury set by having ‘Old Skool’ in the charts at number 28. I like Dizzee Rascal, although I still prefer his older stuff like ‘Jus A Rascal’ and ‘Fix Up, Look Sharp’.

Just slipping in to the Top 40 at number 40 is Richard Hawley with ‘Tonight The Streets Are Ours’. The track is the first release from new album ‘Lady’s Bridge’ which is out on August 20th. The Singer Songwriter from Sheffield used to be in long forgotten Britpop band The Longpigs, and is now at last finding solo fame.
